Sports for the student community

Sport and academic career

The Politecnico di Torino encourages all the students to integrate sports within the academic journey through a range of initiatives, including Dual Career program, scholarships and recognition of ECTS credits, among others.

PoliTo Sports Teams and Student Teams

The PoliTo Sports Teams bring together students engaged in both competitive and recreational sports, adding value to their connection to the Politecnico. Among the many Student Teams at Politecnico, some focus on applying the knowledge acquired during their academic journey to specific areas within the sports sector.

Courses and recreational sports activities

A wide range of courses is available for the student community. The complete list is available online on the CUS Torino website. To register, students must obtain a membership card and provide a medical certificate confirming their physical fitness for non-competitive sports activities (issued by a general practitioner, as stated in the paragraph below).

To safeguard the health of those engaging in sports activities in Italy, a fitness certificate is required. The type of certificate depends on the nature of the physical activity being practiced. There are three types of physical activity:

  • Competitive sports activity. It refers to sports activities that are practiced systematically or continuously to achieve high-level athletic performance. It is organized by national sports federations or sports promotion institutions recognized by CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) and the Ministry of Education. A medical certificate for competitive sports is mandatory and valid for one year. It must be issued by Sports medicine specialist and include comprehensive examinations to confirm the individual’s fitness for competitive-level sports. These examinations typically include spirometry, urine analysis, vision test, and an electrocardiogram.

  • Non-competitive sports activity. This refers to activities organized by national sports federations or sports promotion bodies recognized by CONI, but not at a competitive level. In these cases, a medical certificate for non-competitive sports is required. It is valid for one year and can be issued by a sports medicine specialist, a general practitioner, a family doctor, or a pediatrician. The certificate must include the results of a medical history and physical examination, blood pressure measurement, and a resting electrocardiogram.

  • Recreational physical activity. This refers to amateur-level physical activity practiced at an amateur and independent level and outside of any organized framework by individuals who are not affiliated with sports federations. It is not aimed at achieving high athletic performance, but rather the goal is to promote physical and mental well-being. A sports medical certificate is not required.
