WELL DRILLING FOR NATURAL RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT AND STORAGE

SSD - 9 CFU (93 hours)

Teachers: prof.  Silvia Haiz, Luca Bianchini, Fabio Parrozza, Valentina Gibilterra, Loredana Orlando, Giuseppe Masocchi, Luigi Orlandi

LEARNING CONTENTS PRESENTATION

The course provides advanced knowledge about drilling activities, concentrated on well planning phase and few hints to operativity while drilling. Issues related to Carbon Capture and Storage will be tackled, too. Both theoretical lessons and practical exercises will be proposed.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge about the workflow and rules to be followed to carry out the planning of a well for hydrocarbon exploration and development and for Carbon Capture and Storage. At the end of the course the students will possess the main theoretical information required for working as drilling engineer.

PROGRAMME

The main subjects of this course are:

-       Well gradients and wellbore stability

-       Casing design

-       Drilling muds and cements

-       Directional drilling

-       Drilling rigs

TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The course includes theoretical lessons and practical exercises, with the aim to clarify the workflows and to show applications of theoretical models to real cases. The exercises will be performed individually with conventional software.
