Major Challenges: Climate change and cognitive bias. Engineering students' proposals for the city of Turin.

On Friday, June 9, 2023, an event entitled " Major Challenges: Climate Change and Cognitive Biases. Engineering students' proposals for the city of Turin," with the participation of Chiara Foglietta, Councillor of the City of Turin for Ecological and Digital Transition, Innovation, Environment, Mobility and Transportation.

The meeting will present the results of the Politecnico's Major Challenges project, now in its second year, in which students in the University's Bachelor's degrees were offered a number of courses co-taught by pairs of professors-one with a technical background and one from the world of the humanities and social sciences -to address topical issues.
Among them, the course "Climate Crisis and Cognitive Bias," taught by Professor Francesco Laio (Department of Engineering for Environment, Land and Infrastructure - DIATI of the Politecnico) and Professor Katiuscia Sacco (Department of Psychology, University of Turin) challenged students to come up with an innovative solution to climate change adaptation and/or mitigation.

The goal of the project was to seek a solution applicable to the city of Turin that would take into account people's psychological biases in the face of change, as well as the need for effective communication capable of simulating action.
The course, after a series of informative and interactive frontal lectures, left room for the exercises necessary for the creation of the final output, a video in which the design solution and its impacts - climatic, economic, social and cultural - were contained. Students were always supported by the course tutors, experts in environmental engineering and psychological neuroscience (Drs. Marta Tuninetti, Irene Ronga, Carla Sciarra and Dr. Paolo Barbieri).

The event thus aims to give back to the city the results obtained, stimulating a dialogue between academia and policy on climate change issues
