University Policy on Open Access

The Politecnico embraces the principles of Open Access to scientific literature and promotes the free dissemination of research results produced at the University. By Rector’s Decree No. 87 of 15 February 2019, the University Policy on Open Access to Scientific Publications was issued.

The Politecnico considers Open Access an added value for research evaluation processes and recognises the connection between Open Access and the evaluation process as an essential part of the commitment to Open Access. For internal evaluation activities, the Politecnico only takes into consideration the contributions deposited in the Institutional Repository, complete with metadata and open or restricted access annex.

  • The Open Access Commission of the Politecnico was established to implement, promote and support Open Access. The main tasks are the formulation and definition of proposals for the promotion of Open Access and the evaluation of possible exemptions to Open Access requested by publishers.
  • The Open Access Working Group was set up to support publishers in copyright management and, in accordance with publishers’ policies, to make contributions deposited in the institutional repository public whenever possible, intervening if necessary on metadata and attachments to ensure compliance with quality standards.

Always include the editorial PDF and if possible make it available in open access.

If your publisher does not allow you to upload the open access editorial version, please include two attachments on the same form:

  • Type: Postprint editorial version/Version of record
  • Access policy: Archive managers only
  • Type of licence: Non-public

 and

  • Type: Postprint/Author’s Accepted Manuscript 
  • Access policy: Visible to all (or possible embargo)
  • Type of licence: Public / CC licence

If the Author’s Accepted Manuscript (the author’s final refereed version without editorial layout) is not allowed either, please include the preprint/submitted manuscript if required by the publisher’s policy.

If in doubt, deposit the editorial version under restricted access and the postprint/Author’s Accepted Manuscript under open access: the Open Access Group will check that the attachments comply with the University Policy and what is allowed by the publishers.

Transformative contracts

The transformative contract is a new type of contract stipulated between institutions (or consortia) and publishers that aims to convert the current contractual model of read-only access to scientific periodicals to the “Read & Publish” model.

The new “Read & Publish” model provides for the joint negotiation of both access rights and publication fees in OA for authors affiliated to the institution. 

In this way, the costs for publishing scientific articles in open access (APC - Article Processing Charges) no longer have to be borne by the authors but are borne directly by the institutions to which they belong.

The main advantages of these new contracts are:

  • facilitate publishers’ transition to full open access of scientific publications;
  • counteract the so-called “double dipping” phenomenon whereby the same institution is forced to pay the publisher a fee for reading scientific journals (subscriptions) and, in addition, authors to pay APCs for the publication of research results funded by the institution itself;
  • reduce, and eventually eliminate, publication costs for authors.

The Politecnico di Torino signed the nationally negotiated 2023-2025 IOP (Institute of Physics) transformational contract, through CRUI-CARE.

The transformative “Read&Publish” contract with costs covered by the Politecnico, provides for:

  • access to the publisher’s collection of periodicals
  • unrestricted publication of Open Access articles in all “hybrid” and “Gold open access” journals included in the collection for all authors affiliated with the Politecnico (publication costs - APC are borne by the University).

The transformative “Read&Publish” contract with costs covered by the Politecnico, provides for:

  • access to the publisher’s collection of periodicals
  • publication of Open Access articles in all hybrid journals for all authors affiliated with the Politecnico (publication costs - APC are borne by the University)

The author retains copyright.

The transformative “Read&Publish” contract with costs covered by the Politecnico, provides for:

  • access to the publisher’s collection of periodicals
  • publication of Open Access articles in all “hybrid” journals included in the Wiley Database collection for all authors affiliated with the Politecnico (publication costs - APC are borne by the University).
  • “Gold open access” journals are excluded from the contract

The publication licence is generally Creative Commons CC-BY. The author may however also choose the CC licence of preference between CC-BY-NC and CC-BY-NC-ND

The transformative “Read&Publish” contract with costs covered by the Politecnico, provides for:

  • access to the publisher’s collection of periodicals subscribed to by the Politecnico
  • publication of Open Access articles in all subscribed hybrid journals and in the publisher’s GOLD OA journals for all authors affiliated with the Politecnico (publication costs - APC are borne by the University)

The Politecnico di Torino signed the nationally negotiated 2023-2027 ELSEVIER transformational contract, through CRUI-CARE.

The transformative “Read&Publish” contract with costs covered by the Politecnico, provides for:

- access to the publisher’s “Freedom Collection” of periodicals

- publication of Open Access articles in all hybrid journals for all authors affiliated with the Politecnico (publication costs - APC are paid by the University) “Hybrid Core”

- publication in 600 Gold Open Access journals: this is a pilot project for the first two years of the contract, at the end of which an evaluation will be carried out by CRUI-CARE

  • Who can publish:

all corresponding authors affiliated with the Politecnico.

  • How to take advantage of the benefits:

at the end of the peer review process and acceptance of the article on the publisher’s platform (EOAP), the corresponding author can choose to publish in Open Access by selecting “Politecnico di Torino” as the affiliating institution. The article will be accessible in Open Access within 24 hours.

The publication licence is Creative Commons CC-BY4. 0. It is also licensed under CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0: its use is not recommended as it is very restrictive.

  • Green Open Access

For all journals included in the “Freedom Collection”, it is possible to deposit the Author’s Accepted Manuscript (the author’s final peer-reviewed version without editorial layout) in IRIS with an embargo limited to 12 months.

The contract covers retroactively all articles accepted for publication from 1 January 2022.

The Politecnico di Torino signed the nationally negotiated 2023-2024 RSC transformational contract, through CRUI-CARE.

The transformative “Read&Publish” contract with costs covered by the Politecnico, provides for:

- access to the publisher’s collection of periodicals

- publication of Open Access articles in all “hybrid” journals published by RSC for all authors affiliated with the Politecnico (publication costs - APC are borne by the University).
