Politecnico's Alessandria campus, active since 1992, hosts experimental research activities and laboratories serving companies in the area and beyond. It mostly belongs to the Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT), but there are also laboratories of excellence of the Department of Energy (DENERG), the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (DIMEAS), and other relevant interdepartmental structures.
The area of the former civic slaughterhouse, formerly owned by the municipality and gradually abandoned, was earmarked for the development of PoliTO activities. The premises owned by Politecnico today cover about 17,000 square metres and have about 8,000 square metres of floor space with a green area of over 5,000 square metres.
In 1994, the newly opened premises were devastated by a flood. The willingness and dedication of students, staff and lecturers made it possible to reactivate teaching activities within container only a month after the event, enabling the then-enrolled students not to miss the year.
