Graduate internships abroad

Why do an internship abroad after graduation?

An internship abroad is an important educational experience that enriches not only your resume but also your personal and cultural journey.

It allows you to:

  • develop soft skills such as adaptability, intercultural communication, and the ability to navigate new and challenging environments;
  • improve your language proficiency by using a foreign language daily in a professional context;
  • gain insight into international work environments with different methodologies, approaches, and corporate cultures compared to Italy;
  • increase your competitiveness on the job market by building a more open, dynamic, and international profile—study-abroad experiences are highly valued on graduates’ resumes;
  • build a global network of contacts that could be useful for future collaborations or career opportunities.

You can do an internship abroad after completing your studies and only after your academic record has been updated by Polito offices.

The regulations of graduate internships abroad are different from the regulations for interships in Italy and they change depending on the country:

  • in some countries extracurricular internships may not be paid;
  • in some countries you may need an entry visa;
  • some countries exclusively allow curricular internships for students and not for graduates (before initiating the process, check with the host institution if according to local regulations recent graduates can do an internship through the University). The host organisation should email the regulatory references to tirocini@polito.it before initiating the procedures.

First of all you need to agree the internship content, terms, schedule and duty station with your Host Organization. It is is important that you prepare the required documents (internship agreement) BEFORE the internship begins, following the accreditation of the Host Organization on Politecnico portal.

Before you start the process for an internship abroad, the Company/Institution must register to the service by signing up HERE.

Once the registration request has been submitted, the Host Organization will receive a confirmation email containing a validation link. After validating the registration, it will receive the credentials to access the platform and will need to complete its profile and upload a copy of the company registration certificate (translated into English) or, if unavailable, a copy of the ID of the legal representative or an authorized delegate. These documents must be uploaded to the “Request Internship Agreement” section (see example screenshot),

At the end of this procedure, the Company/Institution will be on the list of hosting companies/institutions and you will be able to proceed to fill out your online internship agreement, which is necessary to start your internship abroad (tab "internship" on your personal page).

The Internship Agreement is a document that you must fill out online. It must be appovated BEFORE you start your internship.

It includes the following information:

  • your personal data;
  • information on your Host CompanyI/Institution and contact details of your Company/InstitutionTutor, the person chosen to assist and guide you during your internship;
  • contact details of your Academic Tutor: you can choose your Academic Tutor among Polito faculty members; he/she is in charge of verifying that the contents and activities carried out during your internship are consistent with your academic studies;
  • work schedule and internship dates;
  • expected training outcomes and contents of your internship.

After filling out the online form (available in the "Opportunities - Career Hub/Graduate Internship/New Progetto Formativo" section of your personal page on the portal), you must print the agreement, sign it and have it signed by both your tutors. Then the Host Oragnization will have to send it by email to tirocini@polito.it at least 7 days before the internship start date. The Career Hub Service Manager of Politecnico will sign it and send a copy of the document to the Host Organization.

When your internship is over, you need to return your internship booklet (duly signed by both your tutors) to the Office, preferably, within 15 days of the end date of your internship.
You also need to fill out an online evaluation questionnaire (go to your personal page of the Teaching Portal – click "Opportunities" tab - select your internship).

Before leaving for your internship, verify with the embassy/consulate of your host country if you need an entry visa (even if the host country belongs to the Schenghen Area). This depends on your nationality and current domicile.
It is your responsibility to gather the necessary information and apply to get your visa (if required).
If you are a non-EU national, you can get support from the IMMIGRATION DESK of Politecnico di Torino.

If you are a EU national and you have a European Health Insurance Card, you will have access to state-provided healthcare in EU countries (only for emergencies or necessary medical treatment). If you are going to travel to a non-EU country, you must buy a private health insurance valid throughout the entire period of your stay. A private health insurance can be useful in a EU country as well. You can find specific information by country on the website of the Ministry of Health.
If you are a non-EU citizen, check the healthcare requirements at the embassy/consulate of your host country before leaving.
