The course on “Exploring Sustainable Future (s) in construction” by prof. Andrea Bocco (Politecnico di Torino) and prof. Guillaume Habert (ETH Zürich) will be held on the 22nd and 23rd of April

Enrolment is already available: https://didattica.polito.it/pls/portal30/gap.pkg_guide.viewGap?p_cod_ins=01MHFRS&p_a_acc=2024&p_header=S&p_lang=IT&multi=N

The course explores relevant questions regarding a possible paradigm shift in the construction sector towards local and bio-based materials. What would be the size of a territory that is able to self-sustain the demand for such materials, considering both new construction and retrofit? What is the limit for transport distances for a construction to be considered ‘local’?
To answer these questions, the material production cycles should be explored from resource availability to manufacturing and distribution, rethinking supply and demand chains in a circular economy approach. This is to be associated, on one hand, with the assessment of the local knowledge and skills (of the industry, designers, craftspeople, etc.); and, on the other, with analysis of local the building regulations and, if it is the case, with their amendment so to allow the employment of natural and bio-based materials – some of which may have been commonplace in local building traditions.

Schedule:

22 April
Module I: 9:30 – 13:00

Bioregional economy. Regenerative territories. ‘Vegetarian’ architecture and Vernacular architecture of the future.

Module II: 14:30 – 18:30

LCA calculation methods. Carbon storage, economic flow and transport calculation.

Room 6 VM, via Oddino Morgari, 36/b

23 April

Module III: 9:00 – 13:00

Case studies: Strawbale buildings as carbon sinks.

Room 2 VM, via Oddino Morgari, 36/b
