The Italian phase of the international workshop PoliTO-Ryukoku
As part of the activities of PoliTO JapanHub, the week of 17 February saw the Italian phase of the international workshop organised by Politecnico di Torino and Ryukoku University in Kyoto on local development processes and strategies and social innovation in rural peripheral areas. The workshop had already seen the Italian-Japanese team engaged in an initial- Japanese phase held in September in Kyoto prefecture.
As part of this course, five students from Politecnico and the same number from Ryukoku analysed the socio-economic challenges that characterise the Lanzo Valleys area, and worked together on the formulation of an integrated place-based territorial development strategy.
After an initial day at the Valentino venue and meetings at the Social Fare in Turin, on Tuesday and Wednesday, the group of students, coordinated by Magda Bolzoni and Giancarlo Cotella (Politecnico di Torino) together with Naoko Oishi and Daisuke Abe (Ryukoku University) explored the area covered by the workshop first-hand. They visited various locations in the Lanzo Valleys, including Lanzo Torinese, Lemie, Usseglio, Cantoria and Ala di Stura, meeting and debating with public and private actors active in the Valleys in order to grasp the challenges, desires, as well as existing policies, opportunities and resources for the development of the context analysis and strategy.
On Saturday morning, 22 February, the presentation of the first project ideas conceived by the students took place at the Valentino Castle. The analysis and strategy will be further refined and consolidated in the coming weeks, through remote meetings between the Italian and Japanese working groups, until the final proposal will be delivered at the end of March.
This activity materialises the aspirations contained in the Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities, signed by the Rectors of the two universities in July 2023, on the occasion of the opening of the Japan Hub in Kyoto.
