First mission in Japan for the new director of Japan Hub, Giuseppe Quaglia
As part of Japan Hub project, Japan Hub’s new director Giuseppe Quglia has just returned from his first mission to Japan since his nomination in September. One of the main objectives of the trip was to strengthen existing relations and launch new collaborations, and it included several locations in the country.
Of great importance for relations with the Italian diplomatic organization were the visits to the Italian Embassy in Tokyo and the Italian Consulate General in Osaka. Both meetings were an opportunity to talk to the Ambassador and the Consul about the activities of the Japan Hub and, in particular, about the participation of the Politecnico di Torino in the Osaka Expo 2025.
The mission also offered the opportunity to visit some of the university's historical partners (Institute of Science Tokyo, Kyoto University) and new universities for possible future collaborations (Osaka Institute of Technology, Kanazawa University, Kanazawa Medical University).
Among the consolidated partnerships, the first Joint Supervision agreement was signed with the Institute of Science Tokyo for a doctoral student of the Politecnico currently on mobility at this Institution. During the same visit a proposal was approved to start procedures for the signing of a new agreement between the two universities, this time at institutional level.
The new universities visited included the Osaka Institute of Technology and Kanazawa University. These institutions proved to be very interesting and the meeting ended with the agreement to sign up a Memorandum of Understanding.
Lastly, the director took part in the ICMT2024 conference, International Conference on Mechatronics Technology, held at Kanazawa University, where he received the Best Paper Award for his paper entitled ‘Design and Preliminary Testing of a Tactile Sensing System for Robotic Manipulation’, written together with researchers Giovanni Colucci and Simone Duretto from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering-DIMEAS. The occasion of the conference allowed for a further increase of the spectrum of knowledge with the Japanese partners that were present.
