Green Transition and Social Innovation: an international workshop between Politecnico di Torino and Ryukoku University

Within the frame of the collaboration between Politecnico di Torino and Ryukoku University of Kyoto, a group of 8 students, together with their professors, prof. Naoko Oishi and prof. Keiro Hattori, visited PoliTo for a Project Based Learning workshop “Green Transition and Social Innovations – Towards Resilient Cities”.

Between March 2nd and March 6th, the students had an intense week of lectures at Castello del Valentino, site visits and group work: the program, developed by Giancarlo Cotella, Riccardo Giovanni Bruno and Magda Bolzoni (DIST), included lectures offered by PoliTo professors and researchers as well as meetings with local stakeholders and experts in different areas of Turin relevant to their field of study.

The group was welcomed by the Director of DIST, Andrea Bocco, and by the Director of Japan Hub Giuseppe Quaglia, who awarded prof. Naoko Oishi the PoliTo Japan Hub Academy Fellowship for her longstanding relationship with Politecnico, paving the way for further collaborations.

The days have been structures with lectures in the mornings and site visits in the afternoons. Different colleagues offered their contribution to bring forward the students’ understanding and knowledge on urban changes, nature-based solutions, food sytems and urban food policies, and the socio-economic implications of urban green transformations. On Monday the students visited Porta Palazzo, where they learnt about the initiatives targeting food waste by EcodalleCittà, and Quadrilatero Romano, also meeting with Torino Urban Lab. The following afternoon they could observe the ongoing transformation of the Northern peripheries of Torino, walking in the area together with local stakeholders and researchers, while the day after they had the chance to visit the Mirafiori Sud Living Lab, meeting representatives of the City of Turin and researchers involved in the project.

At the end of the week, the students, divided into three groups presented the results of their work: a comparative reflection on Turin/Italy and Kyoto/Japan on the topics of nature-based solution, social justice, and food policies. A discussion with the audience, professors and students of PoliTo Master in Urban and Regional Planning, followed the presentation, closing an intense week of learning, exchange, and common reflection.
