The programme offers two specialist tracks, Urban and Regional Planning for ecological transition and Planning for the Global Urban Agenda, which share the same teaching methods but have different objectives.
The Italian-taught curriculum – Urban and Regional Planning for ecological transition - develops around three design experiences, namely: the design of public spaces, the design process of a municipal land use plan, the design and implementation process of a landscape, environmental and territorial plan. Particular attention is given to that technical knowledge required to practice planning in Italy.
Choosing this specialist track:
- In the 1st semester of Year 1 you will learn about the tools and processes for territorial and strategic planning, the role of the European Union in urban and territorial policies, transport planning, history of territorial heritage and infrastructures related to energy, acoustic and environmental issues and their inclusion in the urban fabric.
- In the 2nd semester of Year 1 you will study wider regulatory and institutional issues. You will simulate the process of drafting and applying a landscape and territorial planning tool. You will learn about land hydrology, which is a necessary knowledge base to deal with territorial and landscape plans and to interact with other specialists.
- In the 1st semester of Year 2 you will simulate the process of drafting a planning tool at the local level and you will study urban and territorial geography as well as sociology of the environment and the territory.
- Throughout the 2nd semester of Year 2 you will work to get ready for the final examination (in Italian or English), which consists in writing a research thesis or a more professionalizing thesis and in taking part in an internship project.
The English-taught curriculum – Planning for the Global Urban Agenda – is an international pathway that takes up the challenge of the United Nations New Urban Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Course pays attention to the variety of spatial government systems and global urbanisation phenomena in different geographical areas. Among the handson activities, three complex design experiences are proposed: urban design, conservation planning of natural and built heritage; urban and territorial planning processes taking into account climate change and of energy challenges.
Choosing this specialist track:
- In the 1st semester of Year 1 you will learn the foundations of several disciplines: territorial governance in Europe and in the world, history of urban settlements and urban planning, European and international policies for nature, environment and landscape, infrastructuresconnected with energy, acoustic and environmental issues, territorial analysis with GIS tools.
- In the 2nd semester of Year 1 you will develop the ability to work on existing settlementsusing a regeneration perspective focusing on both the role of cultural and natural heritage and the role of social groups. In addition, you will learn about international organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union: decision-making processes and development in the framework of participation in international partnership projects.
- In the 1st semester of Year 2 you will learn the foundations of planning for climate change for adaptation of cities and territories, focusing on the scope of spatial planning tools. You will focus on urban and regional studies, economics, management, collective planning of urban and spatial development processes.
- Throughout the 2nd semester of Year 2 you will work to get ready for the final examination (in Italian or English), which consists in writing a theoretical or applied thesis and in taking part in an internship project.
