Call for Papers | Shaping Future Cities: Turning Assessment into Strategies and Actions for Resilience
The Call for Papers is now open for "Shaping Future Cities: Turning Assessment into Strategies and Actions for Resilience", a Special Issue of Sustainability (ISSN 2071-1050) belonging to the section "Sustainable Urban and Rural Development", guest edited by Beatrice Mecca, Francesca Abastante, and Ombretta Caldarice.
Special Issue Information
The past decade has been the hottest ever recorded, underscoring the urgent need for effective global and European efforts to reduce emissions. In line with the objectives of the European Green Deal, adapting to climate change in urban environments is a key priority. Although urban areas cover only 4% of Europe’s land, they are home to 75% of its population and account for 70% of total emissions, making them central to the green transition.
However, research indicates that fewer than 40% of European governments engage in an efficient planning process for infrastructure investments or systematically assess project quality before implementation. In this context, two critical issues emerge in advancing climate adaptation in urban areas:
Original research articles and reviews are welcome, especially those related to operative, theoretical, and case studies on assessment, planning, and design in support of urban climate adaptation processes. Topics for consideration include, but are not limited to, the following:

- The use of nature-based solutions and ecosystem approaches to promote biophilic urban design;
- The development and application of decision-making and evaluation tools to support policy choices by assessing the values created and lost through potential transformations.
Original research articles and reviews are welcome, especially those related to operative, theoretical, and case studies on assessment, planning, and design in support of urban climate adaptation processes. Topics for consideration include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Multicriteria decision support approaches;
- Value creation;
- Nature-based solutions and ecosystem approaches;
- Climate resilient cities and sustainable urban policies;
- Policy-making and sustainability assessment;
- Cost–benefit evaluation and mixed methods.
- Format & types: research articles, review articles, and short communications in English are invited. Authors may submit a title and abstract (~250 words) to the Editorial Office for preliminary assessment.
- Originality & peer-review: manuscripts must be unpublished and not under consideration elsewhere. All submissions undergo a single-anonymized peer-review process.
- Publication & APC: Sustainability is a peer-reviewed open access journal. Accepted papers are published continuously. An Article Processing Charge (APC) of 2400 CHF applies.
- Submission: submissions must be uploaded online directly through the MDPI submission portal.
