Biography

OMBRETTA CALDARICE, architect and urban planner, PhD in Spatial Planning and Urban Development (Politecnico di Milano, 2014), Post-doc Research Fellow (Politecnico di Torino, 2015-2019). She is currently Assistant Professor in Urban and Regional Planning at the Interuniversity Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning (DIST), Politecnico di Torino. She is a Faculty Affiliate Member of the Responsible Risk Resilience Centre - R3C, Politecnico di Torino. Her research activities focus on the interplay between planning and urban resilience through the lens of planning rules. She has ten years of international experience in research, capacity-building and education on the role (and limits) of planning in complex and adaptive systems, assuming a comparative perspective within Europe with particular attention to identifying and transferring good practices. The main interests of her research tackle the challenge on how to make cities more resilient, dealing with the following topics: (i) theories and practices of urban resilience; (ii) mainstreaming resilience in spatial planning; (iii) urban codes and techniques for resilience; (iv) institutional innovation in spatial planning; (v) environmental assessment. She is the co-coordinator of the ERASMUS+ Project with the Witwatersrand University Johannesburg. She is the junior coordinator of the Risk Management and Adaptation working group of the international programme RESURBE on Urban Resilience and Climate Change Adaptation. She teaches Planning for the Environment, MSc in Territorial, Urban, Environmental and Landscape Planning, POLITO. She is member of the Board of the POLITO PhD programme in Urban and Regional Planning, within she coordinated the PhD Excellence Courses Can Urban Resilience be Redeemed? Theories, Models and Tactics for Contemporary Cities (2020) and International Viewpoints on Urban Resilience (2022). She is a member of the scientific committee of the Intensive Training on Urban Resilience (University of Southern of Denmark, Aalborg University, BloxHub Copenhagen). She is a member of the Faculty of the POLITO 2nd level Specializing Master's Programme in Methods and Techniques for Governing Resilient Territories. Her research results have been collected in national and international publications. She has been invited speaker at several national and international conferences. She is the co-editor of the Springer book Urban Resilience for Risk and Adaptation Governance (2019) and the co-editor in the journal Sustainability of the Special Issue Bridging the Gap: The Measure of Urban Resilience (2020). She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Springer Book Series Resilient Cities. Rethinking Urban Transformation.
