Call for Participation | Designing the Open Museum - International Design Workshop

Within the framework of the festival Learning from Satoyama. The Japanese way to sustainable built environment, the call for participation is now open for the international design workshop Designing the Open Museum: from Heritage to Living Courtyard.

The workshop explores the concept of Satoyama, understood as a dynamic balance between human communities and their environment. Participants will develop conceptual design proposals for the reconfiguration of the museum entrance area (courtyard and covered garden), investigating how a semi-enclosed urban space can become open, vibrant, and interactive with the city, where ecological processes and cultural activities coexist.
The call is open to Master’s degree students in Architecture (ACC/MACC - APS/MASt - MAP/MAH), Urban and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, and to post-graduate students of the School of Specialisation in Architectural and Landscape Heritage.

The workshop is structured as follows:
  • an online webinar (approximately 10 days before the workshop) [3 hours]
  • an intensive design workshop from 23 to 26 June 2026 (Turin) [32 hours]
  • two public lectures with Japanese experts
The workshop will be co-supervised by Politecnico di Torino - DAD and DIST Departments and Waseda University - Graduate School of Creative Science and Engineering (Tokyo, Japan).
In partnership with MAO - Museum of Oriental Art (Turin), with the organizational support of the PoliTO Japan Hub and under the patronage of the Consulate General of Japan in Milan and the Fondazione per l’Architettura.
