Autonomous Systems Design with MATLAB & Simulink

The seminar Autonomous Systems Design with MATLAB & Simulink, delivered by Paolo Panarese and Daniele Sportillo, is organized by MathWorks in collaboration with Politecnico di Torino.
The event will take place on Monday, 4 May 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Abstract
This seminar will present how MATLAB and Simulink are used throughout the entire lifecycle of robotics and autonomous systems, from early modeling to real-world deployment.
In particular, it will show how to:
  • model robots and sensors using built-in libraries, URDF/CAD imports, and physically based simulations with Simscape Multibody;
  • design autonomous algorithms, including perception, planning, and control, with examples in AI, SLAM, and reinforcement learning;
  • simulate and test systems at different levels of fidelity, including physics-based models, co-simulation, and integration with external simulators;
  • work with ROS/ROS 2, both at the algorithm level and through model-based approaches for generating ROS nodes;
  • deploy algorithms to real hardware, such as embedded CPUs, GPUs, and NVIDIA Jetson platforms, using automatic code generation.
The aim of the seminar is to demonstrate how a unified, model-based workflow can bridge the gap between theory and practice, enabling reproducible research, faster experimentation, and a smoother transition from simulation to real robots.
