Riding Robotics
On Wednesday, 18 February 2026, from 2.00 pm, will take place a seminar, organised by the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering-DIMEAS, entitled Riding Robotics with professor Masaharu Komori, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Science, Kyoto University.
Abstract
Small vehicles are fascinating, fun, convenient and help our lives. This research field targets small vehicles (small mobility) such as manned mobility, manned robot, riding robot, personal mobility, smart mobility, vehicle, riding, mobile robot. In this field, the research on various aspects such as research on the structure, mechanism, control, and movement of vehicles, research on the body of a rider, research on the psychology of a rider, and concept proposal are being conducted by various researchers. In this talk, the speaker will give a brief introduction to Kyoto University, which he is affiliated with, and share what sparked his interest in vehicles. Then, he will present research in riding robotics: the drift driving experience device, characteristics of human center of pressure shifts in standing posture and their effect on mobile device manipulation, and active omni wheel capable of active motion in arbitrary direction and omnidirectional vehicle.

Biography
Masaharu Komori received the B.E. degree in precision engineering from Kyoto University in 1995, the M.E. degree in 1997, and the Ph.D. degree in 2002. In 2000, he became a research assistant with the graduate school of engineering in Kyoto University, an associate professor in 2004, and a professor in 2017. He is currently with the department of mechanical engineering and science in Kyoto University. His research interests include riding robotics, ability mining, vehicles, robots, human motion, and operation. He is a fellow of JSME. He has received awards, including The Young Scientists’ Prize of The Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the WT Award, the four JSME Medals for Outstanding Paper, the JSME Medal for New Technology, the Ichimura Prize in Science for Distinguished Achievement, the two FA Foundation Paper Awards.
The seminar is open to everyone and will take place in person.
