In silico tools for the design, optimization, and validation of devices and procedures for diagnostics and surgery of the gastrointestinal tract
On 22 May 2026, at 2:30 pm, Professor Emanuele Luigi Carniel, Associate Professor of Industrial Bioengineering at the University of Padova, will deliver a seminar entitled In silico tools for the design, optimization, and validation of devices and procedures for diagnostics and surgery of the gastrointestinal tract.
Abstract
The seminar will present recent advances in computational modelling applied to the gastrointestinal tract for the design, optimization, and validation of diagnostic and surgical procedures. Examples will include biomechanical models for the objective diagnosis of esophageal motility disorders, computational tools for patient-specific planning in bariatric surgery, and in silico approaches for the development of minimally invasive intestinal devices. The seminar will also discuss current challenges and future perspectives in gastrointestinal computational modelling, including patient-specific simulations and in silico clinical trials.
Biography
Emanuele Luigi Carniel is Associate Professor of Industrial Bioengineering at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Padova and Head of the Centre for Mechanics of Biological Materials. He obtained his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Padova in 2007. His scientific activity is primarily devoted to the constitutive investigation of biological tissues and to the development of advanced in silico methodologies for biomedical applications. His research integrates experimental mechanics, constitutive modelling, and computational simulation to support the design, optimization, and validation of devices and procedures for diagnostics and surgery. He is the author of more than 120 publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
The seminar is open to everyone, will take place in person, and will be delivered in Italian.
