International Symposium on Shallow Flows

From September 15 to 18, Politecnico di Torino is hosting the International Symposium on Shallow Flows, under the patronage of the International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), the world’s leading association in the field of hydraulic sciences.

The event is organized by the Hydraulics group of Politecnico di Torino, coordinated by professor Costantino Manes of the Department of Environment, Land and Infrastructure Engineering.
The symposium will take place in the R Classroom pavilion of Politecnico and will feature speakers from all over the world, who will discuss a wide range of topics related to Environmental Fluid Mechanics. Among the topics covered:
  • Numerical simulations of fluvial and coastal floods
  • Shallow flows interacting with hydraulic structures and machines (e.g. bridges and turbines)
  • Stratification effects and gravity currents
  • Heat and mass transport processes in canonical and realistic shallow flows
  • Sediment transport and morpho-dynamics in fluvial, coastal and estuarine environments
Other than being an important opportunity of scientific exchange, the symposium will also offer participants the chance to visit the Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of Politecnico, which has a long tradition dating back to Giorgio Bidone, renowned engineer and mathematicians form Turin, considered one of the pioneers of experimental hydraulics in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
