Functional Concrete for Sustainable Constructions Course
A course for PhD students from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and those from the Department of Materials, Sustainable Processes and Systems for Energy Transition was held from March 17th to March 19th. The course was conducted by Dr. Tomoya Nishiwaki together with Prof. Alessandro P. Fantilli (DISEG) & Prof. Paola Antonaci (DISEG).
Carbon neutrality is a global goal and yet cement production causes 8% of CO2 emissions. Therefore, it becomes essential to find more efficient and sustainable alternatives. Lectures focused on: fiber-reinforced concrete, self-healing concrete and 3D printed concrete. In particular, the lecture covered functional concrete advancements and carbon reduction via supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Dr. Nishiwaki is an associate professor in the Department of Architecture and Building Science at Tohoku University since 2010. Politecnico has had fruitful relations with this university for many years including a student exchange agreement.
