CITIES AND UNIVERSITIES DISCOVER THE POWER OF COLLABORATION

What do universities as “learning hubs” signify for the cities of the future?
Driven by the demands of diversifying knowledge-based and globalized economy, university hubs need a close collaboration with city and local business as platform of innovative change. The 21st-century university city necessitates openness and partnership satisfying new way of working and living.
This transformation passes through the student housing: campuses are being redeveloped around a new idea of community. With the increase of freelancers, contract workers and other “global nomads”, young employees are much less tied to specific locations and working hours. On a side, a new itinerant workforce that can work almost from anywhere is rising up. On the other side, because the workspace has been eliminated as a site of social interaction, many such people are struggling to make meaningful connections. Co-living platforms are an important way to fill up this necessity, recreating the traditional neighborhood communities in a compact building.

This summer school focuses on how university dorm is becoming an experimental ground for innovative ways of living.

It implies architectural and urban design. The site is in an historical area of Torino: Piazzale Amelia Piccinini.

Students will be asked to design a residential dorm with functions defining social interaction with the city and outdoor public spaces.

Participants will receive 4 ECTS upon successful completion of a final work.
Students will be asked to collect images, texts and any other material for book publication about the workshop activities.

REQUIREMENTS

The program is open to 3^rd year Undergraduate students and Graduate students in the Architectural and Urban Design fields.

 

FEES

The total fee of 700 Euro covers:

• Workshop participation;
• Tutoring for the whole academic activity;
• Materials;
• Farewell dinner;
• Insurance coverage for accidents occurring on the university premises.

Flight tickets, visa fees, accommodation, meals and travel/medical insurance are not included.

Students currently enrolled in an academic program of the Politecnico di Torino who are up-to-date with their tuition fees payment are entitled to a participation fee of 150 Euro [75 Euro for the first 10 selected students].

After the registration, you will receive within 24 hours a confirmation message on your e-mail with a username and a password, with which you can log in and access the application form.
