Meeting to establish future collaborations with Kawasaki Heavy Industry

On Tuesday, June 18th, 2024, Professor Giuseppe Quaglia and Luigi Tagliavini from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the Politecnico di Torino visited the headquarters of Kawasaki Heavy Industry in Akashi, Japan.

During the visit, the projects of the research group of the Politecnico di Torino and the Japanese company were presented, with particular focus on collaborative robotics and human-machine interface applications. In the days following the meeting, the company expressed interest in potential collaboration on a project built around a Turin Polytechnic patent entitled Handlebar for driving motorized systems (https://www.knowledge-share.eu/en/patents/handlebar-for-driving-motorized-systems). This project aims at developing an intuitive interface to drive motorized system. In facts, many motorized systems, used as aids for strenuous and wearing activities, require a suitable control peripheral. The most commonly used interface, the joystick, is poorly suited in cases where the base of the joystick moves relative to the user using it. To solve this problem, a control interface was developed based on reading the forces applied by the operator to a sensitive area of the device, mimicking the way we move objects around: we apply forces in the direction of the movement we want to achieve. In this way, the driver can apply small forces on the device and then the motorized system takes care of the traction forces needed.
