Biography

This doctoral research is focused on the convergence between Systemic Design and Circular Economy
approach with particular attention in policies and strategies that foster urban transitions generating new
urban economies and resilience. This Ph.D. research is based on the Systemic Design methodology which
through a multidisciplinary and qualitative/quantitative approach delivers a holistic territorial diagnosis
and strategies that respond to the system challenges. This method allows a wider examination on how
post-industrial areas through Circular Economy strategies can generate a sustainable consumption of
local resources and services fostering urban transitions. This subject is intended to be studied through
the dialogue among case studies: Mirafiori South Precinct, Turin-Italy and the Atlantis Greentech
Special Economic Zone in Cape Town, South Africa. The approach of both scenarios (Europe/Africa) aims
to deliver a comparative study from the emerging strategies that foster post-industrial areas to
transition in to a Circular city model. This research ultimately aims to produce framework on systemic
approaches for post-industrial areas which delivers strategies and policy evidence able to generate
better livelihoods within Circular Economy which can impact and be life improving.
