The major automotive markets are increasingly focused on sustainability. From the European Union to the United States and China, the common goal is to reduce the environmental impact of road transport by enhancing vehicle efficiency and investing in cutting-edge technologies. In this context, CARS – Center for Automotive Research and Sustainable Mobility - stands as a multidisciplinary research hub, positioning itself as a national and international reference point for the analysis and experimentation in the fields of transportation, electrification, and smart mobility.

Goals

  • Safer and cleaner road transport for people and the environment
  • Achieving climate neutrality: a technological and digital challenge

Technology & Research Infrastructures

The CARS Interdepartmental Center relies on the CARS-HEV@PoliTO Infrastructure (Center for Automotive Research and Sustainable Mobility – Hybrid/Electric Powertrain and Vehicle Laboratory). This infrastructure is dedicated to the testing of conventional, hybrid, and electric vehicles and powertrains.

Research and Innovation (R&I) infrastructures are the equipment, resources, and services used by the scientific community to conduct research and promote innovation.

Network and Collaborations

The CARS Interdepartmental Centre collaborates with two international associations:

Success Stories

AVL

In 2022, a multi-year collaboration began with a leading company in the development of innovative solutions for powertrains and autonomous driving systems. The distinguishing feature of this partnership is the collaborative setup involving the installation and joint use of a vehicle and powertrain room, which enables experimental activities at the vehicle level, not only focusing on powertrain aspects but also on systems for autonomous driving.

Dayco

In 2020, after developing several joint research projects, CARS and Dayco, a global leader in the design, production, and supply of engine products, decided to implement a new collaboration model. The Hybrid Powertrain Innovation Lab was established, and Dayco's research and development team moved to the Center to work alongside the Politecnico team on the development and experimental validation of hybrid powertrains for road vehicles.

International Working Group

CARS is part of a European scientific community that, within the 2Zero consortium, is actively involved in research programs aimed at developing solutions and technologies to reduce vehicle emissions. Within this working group, the Center is currently a partner in four Horizon Europe research projects: HighScape, EM-TECH, EMPOWER, and SmartCorners.
