Dr. Fabio Cermelli wins the award for the best Italian PhD thesis in Computer Vision (2022-2024)
Fabio Cermelli, an Alumni of the DAUIN Vandal Research Group and currently CTO and Founder of Focoos AI, has been awarded the prestigious prize by CVPL - Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca in Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition e Machine Learning (CVPL— ex-GIRPR) for the best Italian PhD thesis in Computer Vision (2022-2024).
The thesis, entitled "Learning New Classes from Limited Data in Image Segmentation and Object Detection", addresses the problem of "catastrophic forgetting" in semantic segmentation by proposing solutions based on knowledge distillation and incremental learning, also applied to object detection and instance segmentation. Furthermore, it explores methods to learn new classes with few images or without pixel-level annotations, using self-training and pseudo-supervision techniques to improve training efficiency.
The articles cited in the thesis have reached more than 700 citations in total to date.
