History of architecture

History represents an essential component of the doctoral course; it contributes to its cultural identity and innovative research development. Its attention is directed primarily towards architecture and built heritage, with a broad chronological range that goes from the Middle Ages to the contemporary world.

Architecture is considered in all its components and stratifications, in urban and rural contexts, in densely built areas and open spaces, in relation to society, institutions, economic systems, and forms of power. A privileged sector of research concerns aspects of material culture, construction techniques, construction site organization, and stratigraphic analyses. Even the different subjects who, for various reasons, have been involved in the creation of the built environment − clients, patrons, workers, engineers, surveyors − are investigated in their specificities, and in terms of the relationships that are established between them.

In more general terms, the landscape represents the reference framework for all historical research, attentive to the relationships with the environment, with the anthropic impact, with the development over time of the relationships between the components of the ecosystem and the societies settled in the territories. Thus, History raises an interpretative purpose for questioning heritage from the perspective of the future life of buildings.
