Biography

Mónica Muñoz’s research activity is structured around three main thematic areas: • Area 1) Architecture as social practice: Study of traditional construction techniques and local knowledge, with particular attention to the cultural, environmental, and functional value of vernacular architecture. Reinterpretation and re-signification of these models as seeds for Social Innovations and Tecnologías Sociales that contribute to improvement projects adapted to local climates and aligned with circular economy principles. Development of strategies aimed at sustainable regeneration of the built and self-built environment, promoting low-tech, accessible, and contextually grounded architecture. • Area 2) Climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies: Development of design strategies and solutions to strengthen urban and architectural resilience in response to climate change effects, following a performance- and requirement-based approach. Focus is placed, on one hand, on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) conceived as strategies for sustainable and integrated land management; and on the other, on the concept of smart cities, where digital technologies and intelligent systems support the monitoring and management of relevant environmental parameters within the urban context. • Area 3) Sustainability analysis and assessment: Measurement and evaluation of environmental and social impacts associated with the life cycle of production systems and building products using Life Cycle Thinking approaches. This includes established tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for environmental impacts and Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) for social impacts.
