Study visits and field trips

Students of the Master’s degree programme in Georesources and Geoenergy Engineering will have the opportunity to participate in study visits and field trips that allow them to deepen the contents covered in the classroom from a more applicative point of view.

The trips may include both field activities and visits to industrial sites operating in fields that are related to the study programme.

The following are some of the visits realized in a.y. 2021-2022 (in the former Petroleum and Mining Engineering programme) and a.y. 2022-2023:

Environment Park, Turin, January 2023

Cavaglià quarry (BI), October 2023
Course: Raw material Processing and Recycling
Visit to the Cavaglià quarry of Valledora SpA and to the treatment plant connected to the quarry where the material gets cleaned and classified, and where larger pebbles are crushed.

Ecomuseo delle miniere e della Val Germanasca - ScopriMiniera e ScopriAlpi, November 2023
Course: Resources Geology
Visit to ScopriMiniera, “Paola” mine, to discover how the talc of Val Germanasca used to be extracted, and to ScopriAlpi, “Gianna” mine, to see the tectonic contact between the Eurasian plate and the Africa plate.

Course: Excavation Engineering and Underground Works and Mining
Visit to the underground gypsum quarry "Cava San Pietro Prato Nuovo" managed by the company Estrazione Gesso. Demonstration of the room and pillar exploitation method, operated with a drill and blast technique.

​​​​​​​During the technical visit the students had the chance see first-hand the innovative processes to recycle alkaline and lithium batteries and solar panels.

Visit to the factory of Sasil Srl, a company of the Industrial Minerals Group that deals with mining treatments integrated with European environmental issues.

Prali (TO), November 2021
Course: Petroleum and Mining Geology
Visit to the Ecomuseum of mines and Val Germanasca: the students were led to discover how talc of Val Germanasca was once extracted and to dive into the geological past was made to discover how it is possible to find rocks of oceanic origin at the top of the mountains of the Val Germanasca through the discovery of a famous tectonic contact between the EuroAsian Plate and the African Plate visible right at the inside the "ScopriAlpi" tunnel.

  • Several quarries in Piemonte region and beyond (Moncalvo, gypsum; Roaschia limestone; Robilante, quartzite ; Fontane and Imerys – Rodoretto, talc; Rorà and Bagnolo, Luserna stone; Candoglia, marble; Carrara, marble)
  • Several waste treatment and recycling plants (IREN – Torino, plastics; Tritogom, tires; Sasil, sand and glass; Gaia, waste & compost
  • UNICEM Roccavione: quarry and cement plant.
