Call for PhD Students | Designing Human Technologies 12.0

Applications are now open for the doctoral summer school Designing Human Technologies 12.0 (DHT), which will take place from 10 to 12 June 2026 in Val di Susa (Italy).

The doctoral summer school is intended for PhD students who are engaged in or interested in Participatory Design, involving research projects carried out in close collaboration with users, citizens, or other external stakeholders.

The initiative is organized by the University of Trento in collaboration with international universities, including Politecnico di Torino.

Topic
Designing Human Technologies is a broad Participatory Design–oriented research approach, centered on the human principle of participation and a strong focus on ethical considerations.
Common goals of research activities in this field include adopting a constructive, solution-oriented approach in close dialogue with citizens and users.
In-depth analysis of how designs are used and integrated into users’ daily lives, together with innovative design solutions, lies at the core of this course.
The human-centered principle involves engaging users and key stakeholder groups in both the design process and the evaluation of how effectively design artefacts meet their intended goals.
Technology is understood in a broad sense, encompassing information and communication technologies, sustainable environmental technologies, energy technologies, and technologies for design in urban, natural, and other spatial contexts.

Application deadline: 20 April 2026
