Call for Participation | Colonial Echoes, Urban Futures: Archives, Memory, and Generative AI in Postcolonial Critique

Colonial Echoes, Urban Futures: Archives, Memory, and Generative AI in Postcolonial Critique is a multidisciplinary seminar and workshop that examines how colonial archives and urban histories can be reinterpreted through Generative AI.

The event is organised by the Interuniversity Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning and coordinated by Pelin Bolca, Assistant Professor in History of Architecture, and Alessandro Aliberti, Assistant Professor in Information Processing Systems.

Through keynote lectures and a one-day interdisciplinary workshop, participants will critically reflect on the politics of the archive, algorithmic bias, and the ethical implications of AI in urban and historical research. Keynote lectures will be delivered by professor Patricia Morton, University of California, Riverside and President of the Society of Architectural Historians and professor Roger Louis Martinez-Davila, University of Colorado, addressing the question of the archive, digital narratives, and historical responsibility through Generative AI.

Programme
  • Day 1 establishes a shared critical framework on colonial archives and microhistories of resistance, foregrounding marginal voices and alternative readings of visual and spatial sources, while examining how generative AI may reproduce or reshape Eurocentric narratives through algorithmic bias and the politics of representation.
  • Day 2 is a collaborative workshop extending the seminar through experimental, pedagogical activities focused on critical awareness, comparative analysis, and the ethical and cultural implications of AIgenerated imagery.

The event will take place on 4-5 June 2026 at Castello del Valentino, Interuniversity Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning-DIST, Politecnico di Torino.

Participation is free and limited to approximately 20 selected students. Applications (motivation letter and CV) are due by 10 April 2026 at this link.
