Urban Regeneration Through Culture | An Economic Analysis with Examples from Sweden

Urban regeneration through culture has been a policy focus in European cities for over three decades. Both institutional initiatives and the independent cultural life of cities have been cited to support the argument that culture enhances the attractiveness of urban areas. The seminar explores the advantages and limitations of culture-led urban regeneration policies, with particular attention to their ‘economic framework effects’ for local governments and cultural actors. By ‘economic framework effects’, we refer to the economic transformations experienced by specific stakeholders as a result of such policies in regenerated urban areas. Given longstanding critiques of urban regeneration, particularly its role in driving gentrification, the seminar will present recent data from Sweden. This will serve as a basis for discussing lessons learned and assessing whether further insights can be drawn from current policy approaches in urban contexts in both Italy and Sweden.

The seminar intitled "Urban Regeneration Through Culture: An Economic Analysis with Examples from Sweden" is organised by the Interuniversity Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning-DIST of Politecnico and will feature the participation of the visiting professor Katja Lindqvist who will present opportunities and limitations related to culture-led urban development policies through examples in Sweden and comparison with the Italian framework.
