Rural for Whom? Agency, Imagination, and the Crisis of Rural Subjectivity in the Bishan Project

The PhD candidate Hanqing Zhao (XXXVI cycle - DASP) will discuss his ongoing research with Junjie Xi (Liverpool University) and Lidia Preti (Politecnico di Torino).

Using the Bishan Project as a case study, this research examines the crisis of rural subjectivity in contemporary China, focusing on the question: rural for whom? Amid rapid urbanization and rural marginalization, the project’s attempt to reimagine rural subjectivity through cultural revival exposed tensions between intellectual ideals and local needs. The project reveals structural conflicts over the ownership, representation, and future of the rural.
