Building empathy and understanding: encounters in the Lisbon Museum
The conference, titled Building Empathy and Understanding: Encounters in the Lisbon Museum, will be delivered by Joana Sousa Monteiro, Director of the Museu de Lisboa. The event, which is part of the conference cycle "Heritage as a Project" organised within the activities of the Centro Studi Vera Comoli, Centre for History, Heritage and Inclusive Innovation, will open with institutional greetings from Professor Andrea Bocco, Director of the Interuniversity Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning-DIST and an introduction by Professor Rosa Tamborrino (DIST)

Biography
Joana Sousa Monteiro has been director of the Museu de Lisboa since 2015. From 2010 to 2015, she served as Museums Project Adviser to the Lisbon Councillor. Between 2000 and 2010, she was Assistant Coordinator of the Portuguese Museums Network, under the Portuguese Institute for Museums and Conservation. Earlier in her career, she worked at the Institute of Contemporary Art (1997-2000) and the National Museum of Contemporary Art (1994). She holds a degree in History with a specialisation in Art History (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), a postgraduate degree in Museology (Universidade Lusófona - Centro Universitário Lisboa), and another postgraduate degree in Cultural and Creative Management and Entrepreneurship (ISCTE). Before being Co-Chair of the Strategic Plan Committee of ICOM (the International Council of Museums), she was a member of the Portuguese ICOM National Committee Board (2014-2017) and Chair of ICOM – CAMOC, the International Committee for the Collections and Activities of the Museums of Cities (2016-2022).
