Abstract
The Green Gecko project aims to enhance the quality and relevance of engineering education in Southeast Asia by addressing climate change-related issues. It will develop new pedagogical approaches and teaching materials that meet industry and societal needs, promoting cooperation between European and Southeast Asian universities and engaging universities with industry and society. The Philippines and Thailand are among the most affected by climate change, necessitating engineers skilled in reducing carbon footprints. Current engineering programs in these countries lack comprehensive sustainability concepts, and there is limited collaboration between universities and industries, leading to a skills mismatch. The Green Gecko project gathers 4 universities from the Philippines, 4 Higher Education Institutions from Thailand 4 European partners, and 6 associated partners.
The general objective is to strengthen the capacity of Thailand and the Philippines to meet environmental challenges by training future engineers in green transition skills. The Green Gecko project has the ambition to support these efforts by introducing the concept of sustainable engineering, strengthening the link between industry and academia, empowering Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) by training future engineers and teachers in sustainable development skills, promoting regional and international collaboration. This project addresses 2 predefined regional priorities for Asia. By developing innovative modules and teaching methodologies linked to sustainable development and industry needs, focusing on carbon footprint assessment and reduction, it tackles the “Green Deal” priority. It is also related to sustainable growth and jobs by training future engineers in sustainable development to upskill the young population and improve job prospects. The project aligns with the ERASMUS+ Program by enhancing higher education quality and relevance for the labor market and society. It supports the modernization, accessibility, and attractiveness of higher education and promotes cooperation between European and non-European countries. The project will develop responsive training programs, curricula, and teaching materials, addressing global climate change challenges and fostering cooperation between universities and industry.
