Beyond the MAP #15 | Constructing Modernity
Architectural Culture and Socio-Spatial Change in Montenegro, 1960s–1980s
A seminar of the "Beyond the Map" lecture series by the Master's Degree in Architecture for Heritage
This lecture examines modernist architecture in Montenegro from the 1960s to the 1980s as the spatial articulation of a broader process of social and territorial modernization. Moving beyond a stylistic reading, it situates architectural production within the specific institutional, economic and cultural conditions of socialist Yugoslavia, including accelerated urbanization, self-management, architectural competitions, tourism development, professional and institutional infrastructures, and reconstruction following the 1979 earthquake. Through housing, civic and cultural complexes, tourist settlements, administrative buildings and memorial architecture, the lecture investigates how international modernist principles were locally negotiated through topography, materiality, climate and collective programmes. It argues that Montenegro’s modernist architecture cannot be understood solely through form and style, but must be read in relation to the social, institutional and territorial conditions that shaped its production. Such a contextual reading is essential for understanding both its historical significance and its contemporary heritage value.
