How HPC and Physical Modeling Enables Industrial Innovation

The seminar "How HPC and Physical Modeling Enables Industrial Innovation" will be held on 16 July 2026 at 10,30 am in Meeting Room C. Ferrari, on the II Floor of DIMEAS, and will be presented by Dr. Joel Guerrero, Principal Investigator of the Digital Twin and Advanced Simulation Research Unit at Leonardo Labs.

Abstract
The presentation will explore how High-Performance Computing (HPC) and physics-based modelling are enabling innovation across industries such as aerospace, automotive and energy. It will illustrate how advanced numerical simulations, multi-physics modelling and virtual prototyping support faster and more efficient product development, allowing engineers to evaluate design alternatives and predict product performance before physical prototypes are built. The seminar will also discuss the role of digital twins and artificial intelligence in improving engineering workflows and supporting data-driven design decisions.

Biography
Dr. Guerrero holds a PhD in Engineering from the University of Genoa (Italy) and a Master's degree from ISAE-SUPAERO (France). His expertise covers Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), turbulence modelling, multiphysics simulations, optimisation and advanced simulation technologies. Before joining Leonardo Labs, he served as Assistant Professor at the University of Genoa, where he taught turbulence modelling, Computational Fluid Dynamics, optimisation and practical CFD using OpenFOAM and Fluent. He is also a Co-founder & CTO of Wolf Dynamics, a spin-off of the University of Genoa. With more than ten years of experience in aerospace, automotive, energy, naval and biomedical applications, he combines academic research with industrial innovation. He is also a science communicator and creator of a YouTube channel dedicated to STEM and finance, followed by more than 120,000 subscribers.
