"AI-Enhanced Architecture" Summer School | Evolution of AI tools in Architecture

The Department of Architecture and Design-DAD and AI4I are organizing the lecture "Evolution of AI Tools in Architecture" as part of the "AI-Enhanced Architecture" Summer School. The event will take place on 17 July 17 2026, from 5,30 pm at OGR Torino.

The presentation traces the rapid evolution of AI tools in architectural practice, from the first wave of text-to-image models in 2022 (Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion) through the more controlled workflows that followed: ControlNet and ComfyUI for guided image generation. More recently, tools like Gemini and ChatGPT are being used both as design and scripting assistants and, via image generation integrations, as visualisation tools, enabling iterative, natural-language editing of architectural visuals. The presentation will also touch on massing and performance-based tools such as Autodesk Forma, which apply AI at the urban and site scale. Drawing on daily practice and ongoing research by Lorenzo Mattozzi and Fredy Fortich, it examines both proprietary and open-source tools, the shift from prompt-based experimentation to integrated design workflows, and the current frontier, including the latest image and 3D generation models and their emerging role in the architectural process.

The Speakers
Lorenzo Mattozzi (IT), Associate Architect, has played a key role in leading and coordinating numerous projects at MVRDV’s Asia Studio and DAS Studio since 2017. His interest in new technologies, especially AI, has driven him to explore innovative tools that streamline the architectural design and delivery process, enhancing both efficiency and creativity. He has led projects of various scales and across all phases, with a particular focus on adaptive reuse in recent years.
Fredy Fortich (CO), an Architect and Engineer specializing in computational design, has been pivotal in advancing MVRDV’s integration of artificial intelligence and BIM into architectural practice. Since joining MVRDV, he has served as a Technical Architect and BIM Manager at the French and Asia Studios, contributing his expertise in BIM coordination, performance-based design, generative design, and machine learning methods.
