Aggregation functions: from the arithmetic mean to the aggregation based on non-additive measures
The challenge of combining lists of numerical values into a single representative figure is central in many real-world applications. This issue becomes particularly significant in ranking scenarios, where multiple numerical assessments must be condensed into one final score.
Examples range from aggregating jury members’ evaluations to combining the scores of alternatives based on different criteria. A timely and relevant application is the measurement of composite indicators for SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance).
Aggregation functions are specifically designed to address this task. The seminar will introduce their definition and scope, starting from the most basic method—the arithmetic mean—before highlighting its limitations and the resulting extensions and modifications. These approaches have been successfully applied to model and solve complex practical problems.
The seminar will take place on October 2 at 3:00 PM in Sala Vigliano, Castello del Valentino, with speaker professor Matteo Brunelli from Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Trento, and discussant professor Marta Bottero of Interuniversity Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning-DIST.
