What's wrong with energy efficiency?
Nuovo appuntamento della rubrica "Theseus Colloquia", un ciclo di seminari sui temi della tecnologia, delle sue precondizioni e del suo impatto sociale, economico, politico e ambientale, promossi dal Centro studi Theseus del Politecnico, tenuti da esperti internazionali che lavorano su questioni fondamentali per le società contemporanee in un’era di trasformazioni tecnologiche.

Abstract
In technical terms, efficiency is a matter of delivering the same service but with fewer resources, such as energy, time or money. Given the challenges of climate change and the need to live more sustainably, this seems to be an eminently sensible goal. This Colloquium will take the opposite view, arguing that the pursuit of efficiency is positively counterproductive in that it sustains and normalises present standards of living and current levels of consumption. This has the invisible and perhaps unintended effect of reinforcing these expectations and building them into future systems of provision. The way out is to promote and encourage a more fundamental debate about what energy is for, and about how demand is made and met.

Biografia
Elizabeth Shove è distinguished professor di sociologia alla Lancaster University. È nota per il suo lavoro sulla teoria delle pratiche sociali e sul consumo e la domanda, e partecipa attivamente alle attività del Center for Practice Theory di Lancaster. Tra il 2013 e il 2019 Elizabeth è stata direttrice del centro DEMAND (Dynamics of energy, mobility and demand). Il suo libro più recente, "Connecting Practices: large topics in society and social theory", mostra l'apporto della teoria delle pratiche a grandi temi come il commercio mondiale, le tendenze relative all’obesità e altro ancora.
Elizabeth è attualmente impegnata a riflettere sulla teoria delle pratiche e sulla vita di batteri, funghi e virus.
