Envisioning just urban features: using visual methods to trace geographies of policing

A meeting of the Beyond Inhabitation Lab - Spring 2023 seminar series entitled "Envisioning just urban features: using visual methods to trace geographies of policing" will be held on Thursday 22 June 2023. The series of talks and collective conversations organised by the Beyond Inhabitation Lab explores how ideas of dwelling are reinvented through urban struggles in different geographical areas.

Abstract

This talk considers the use of visualization as a method for studying urban policing and surveillance. Shifting away from the use of photographic images to capture instances of police violence, this talk focuses on what is at stake in making visible the everyday, often diffuse and difficult to catalogue forms of municipal policing that are embedded in the urban. Drawing on a collection of research from six U.S. Cities, this talk shares the process of designing an open-access toolkit to map practices of policing and surveillance that are enmeshed in the planning and facilitation of urban life. It also considers how we might move beyond mapping geographies of policing and towards envisioning just urban futures
