Other activities and projects related to teaching
Teaching activities include, beginning in the AA 2021-2022, an increase in laboratory experimental activities, focusing on mechanical testing of materials. Tensile tests with universal servohydraulic machines are conducted, highlighting the specific effects of state variables, i.e., strain, strain rate, temperature on plastic flow curves. Special effects that are conventionally described in lecture in the classroom, but so far have never been shown experimentally, and in particular static and dynamic aging, Portevin Le Chatelier effect, are highlighted. Specific experiments, using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) hardware and software, are being developed to study deformation fields under stress, showing localized plasticity effects in uniform stress fields. Correlations between localized plastic instabilities and brittleness of materials are shown using experimental procedures

Other activities and projects related to research
The research activity is mainly experimental and is carried out by means of mechanical tests aimed at measuring stresses and strain fields in metal alloys, accompanied by microstructural studies by optical and and electronic metallography, supplemented by fractographic investigations by scanning electron microscopy. Currently, the research subjects are as follows:
1) study of innovative heat treatments on light die casting alloys, to increase their mechanical properties
2) study of fatigue strength of foundry alloys in the presence of manufacturing defects, with special attention to the comparison of behavior under rotating bending and under axial loads, where differences in fatigue life are expected
3) study and improvement of the Locati method for fatigue life estimation by the single-sample method, with special attention to threaded component
4) investigation of fatigue crack propagation velocity on rail steels, with special attention to the activation of mixed modes of propagation, detection of crack closure phenomena, and modeling of behavior in the propagation threshold zone
5) Investigation of the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect in rolled high-strength aluminum alloys characterized by high crystallographic textures
6) research on hydrogen embrittlement in high-strength steels and valve steels, with the development of rapid and inexpensive hydrogen adsorption methodologies under stress and different triaxial stress states by cathodic absorption techniques
