Video analysis of facial expressions in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias using artificial intelligence algorithms

POPS_progetto Alzheimer

Duration: da 01/2023 a 12/2025

Scientific Coordinator: Gabriella Olmo

Project Type: Project funded by competitive grant

PoliTO Role: Scientific partner

Abstract

The project aims to create a technological support to help clinicians estimate the probability of evolution from MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment) to full-blown dementia, and the differential diagnosis of different types of dementia (Alzheimer's, fronto-temporal, Lewy bodies, etc.).

To this end, a clinical trial is being conducted in which patients with MCI undergo CSF sampling to identify protein markers of Alzheimer's disease (beta-amyloid, tau protein), which constitutes the ‘ground truth’ for diagnosis. In parallel, patients are subjected to cognitive tests, during which physiological parameters are measured and video footage is taken to assess their emotional activation, which is well known to be correlated with the different subtypes of dementia but is not currently assessed as part of the dementia diagnosis protocol.
