Abstract

The design process introduced for the Legamificio in Borgomanero falls within the realm of complex considerations and practices.

On the one hand, the physical space is the starting point and lever for the entire operation: an abandoned and disused manufacturing building that represents a critical element in the urban environment, while at the same time constituting an important part of the history and identity of the community and a valuable testimony to industrial archaeology. Above all, it is a building whose morphology and typology lend themselves well to the creation of spaces of collective and public value, located in a strategic part of the urban fabric, between the riverfront and the hospital, and in direct continuity with other pre-existing historical buildings also owned by the municipality that can be involved in the project.

On the other hand, the administration's desire not only to resolve an environmental issue, but also to use this location as a platform for social and cultural infrastructure, with a primary focus on the elderly and young people in the area.

In addition, an inclusive process is being launched - involving social and health services, the third sector, young people and schools - to enrich and refine the initial programme, taking into account the characteristics and opportunities of the existing structures. This is an intensive participatory process, which sees the project evolve within the process itself, with the presentation of progress reports, allowing the various parties to express their views and take a position

This outcome has led Legamificio to establish itself as a true social and cultural infrastructure, bringing together a mix of innovative services and intergenerational spaces for meeting and leisure, cultural consumption and production, joint activities, residential facilities for the elderly, and a hub for young people, children and families.
