The “Community Map” project (2023) as a form of grassroots democracy has helped to recognise the Borgo San Secondo neighbourhood in Turin from the perspective of those who live there and experience it, to describe its significant and distinctive characteristics.
The aim is to outline the current elements of the community and to stimulate interest and participation in a public art project, from the ‘Community Map’ of Borgo San Secondo to the ‘Art in Transit’ mural painting project to improve the degraded walls on the railway side of Via Sacchi. The questionnaire is available through neighbourhood walks and online (April-September 2023), involving associations, residents, shopkeepers and primary schools. The results of the questionnaire will be graphically represented on a map by students from the Accademia Albertina in Turin and presented at public events.
The ‘Portici d'artista’ (Artistic Arcades) project (2022-23) aimed to create an open-air gallery of mural art on 23 shop shutters, collaborating with citizens and shopkeepers, and involving students from the Accademia Albertina, thereby regenerating the west side of Via Sacchi. The walls of the railway complex are partly plastered and partly left exposed, making them susceptible to physical deterioration and vandalism.
The ‘Arte in transito’ (Art in Transit) project (2024-2025), promoted by the local committee and shared with the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti di Torino, Torino Creativa, the city of Turin, and District 1 of Turin, under the supervision of the Superintendency of Architectural Heritage, has produced sketches for 22 public mural art panels, following a selection process among the Academy's students. The Masterplan drawn up includes a two-phase implementation complex with panels installed on walls made available by Ferrovie di Stato.
The public art project is based on the theme of “culture” chosen in the questionnaire and takes into account the peculiarities and critical issues of the space in which it is being implemented: historical events, urban decay, the ethnic groups present in the district, the wishes of local residents, and associations active in supporting children, the elderly and people with psycho-cognitive disabilities.
