Abstract

Sri Lanka (SL)’s commitment to achieving NetZero targets by 2050 requires a skilled workforce to drive the nation’s sustainable energy transition. The NetZero Skills for SL: Empowering a Sustainable and Resilient Future project aims to address critical skill gaps by upgrading five existing training hubs focused on NetZero technologies: carbon capture, hydrogen energy, smart grids, and circular economy practices. Building on the success of the THREE Lanka initiative, this project introduces modular training programs, stackable master’s degrees, and strong academia-industry-government collaboration. It aligns with global frameworks: European Green Deal and COP29, facilitating international knowledge transfer and adoption of global standards. The project follows a phased approach, emphasizing curriculum development, infrastructure enhancement, and integrating training into industry development plans. Over 2 years, it aims to train 1,000 individuals and enroll 300 students in master’s programs, enhancing employability, fostering innovation, and positioning SL as a leader in NetZero skill development. This initiative tackles advanced technology needs equipping SL’s workforce for the low-carbon transition. By integrating these priorities into higher education and vocational training, it strengthens institutional capacity and empowers learners to address societal and labor market demands. Aligned with CBHE grant call, the project enhances the quality and global relevance of SL’s HE system. By introducing stackable programs, it fosters inclusivity and modular learning pathways. International collaboration promotes innovation, adherence to global sustainability standards, and creates pathways for international recognition of qualifications. Ultimately, the project supports environmental sustainability, strengthens institutions through innovative curricula and facilities, and prepares a skilled, resilient workforce to lead SL’s sustainable and prosperous future.
