Abstract

The project aims to implement the revision of the International System of Units, approved by the Metre Convention in November 2018 and implemented on 20 May 2019, for what concerns the measurement unit of electrical capacitance. The Italian National Standard of capacitance will be redefined on quantum electrical metrology basis, and will be made available for research in physics and metrology and the calibration and traceability needs of the Italian industry. The new capacitance realization will be based on the quantum Hall effect in graphene, implemented in a cryocooler and with digital impedance bridges for its exploitation. It will be permanently available for calibration purposes; the novel physics and instrumental exploitation will open new frontiers in metrology. The Mutual Recognition Arrangement specifies terms for the international mutual recognition of measurement standards and of the validity of calibration certificates. Its technical basis are international Key Comparisons and the declaration of Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC) to the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures. The new capacitance standard, validated through Key Comparisons, will allow to revise the Italian CMCs to the highest level of accuracy, and align them to the major European and international countries.
