Politecnico di Torino and Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) have been working together since 2003 and in 2018 they set up a Joint Centre on Energy Transition, Modelling and Simulation.
The mission of the Joint Centre is to enhance research and foster technology transfer in the field of energy transition to sustainable energy systems based on electricity as a commodity. This research is fundamental to ensure a sustainable future for both Countries. The Joint Centre supports this energy transition and it especially investigates how to electrify energy supply, transmission/distribution and final uses at both local and global level. The objective is to achieve sustainable, affordable and secure energy with the involvement of institutions and businesses as well.
The Joint Centre develops and implements specific activities, including joint research programmes for energy transition in the important field of co-simulation of the Internet of Energy, including global energy interconnection (super grids) and multi-energy exploration and usage at local level (smart/micro grids). The Centre develops global visions of the future of energy and its impacts on human society, especially the vision of electricity in the energy transition with reference to a multi-layer scenario (physical, cyber, technological, economic and social) and a multi-disciplinary context (energy/electrical engineering, ICT, economics, social sciences, environmental sciences, etc.). The Centre also studies the important global energy interconnection that represents the energy dimension of the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’.
The Joint Centre implements its mission through two nodes of a real-time-interconnected lab - one based at Politecnico di Torino and the other at SJTU - that connect through a tunnelling protocol for modelling and simulating energy systems.
