Forests, Wood and Carbon

This course will run from 20 April to 3 June 2026. It is fully online and consists of numerous short videos, educational texts, assignments, multiple-choice quizzes, and exams. Students will study independently, with a few deadlines to meet in order to successfully complete the course.

The course introduces students to the different uses of forests and the raw material flows in the bioeconomy, as well as the potential of wood products for carbon storage. It presents the general principles of life-cycle analysis (LCA), including selected operational phases such as calculating the carbon storage potential of wood. Students are introduced to the basic principles of sustainable forestry and the circular bioeconomy, using wood as an example. The basic structure of wood is also presented, linked to its properties such as appearance, dimensional stability, and strength.
Designed by the School of Chemical Engineering, this course is of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about global carbon sources and sinks and the role of forests in the carbon cycle.

The final deadline for completing the course is 3 June 2026.

End of application period: 1 April 2026.
