Transport of ionic species in clays: opportunities for electrical measurements
The Department of Structural, Geotechnical and Building Engineering-DISEG of the Politecnico di Torino is organizing the seminar entitled “Transport of ionic species in clays: opportunities for electrical measurements”, which will take place on Friday, 17 October 2025, at 5:00 p.m. in Aula Albenga at the Politecnico di Torino.
The seminar will be given by Professor Andriy Yaroshchuk (ICREA, Polytechnic University of Catalonia), an internationally recognized expert in the study of ionic transport phenomena in porous materials.
The talk will address the behavior of clays, which, due to their fixed charges, act as semipermeable membranes influencing ion diffusion as a function of salinity. Recent advances in the understanding of these processes will be presented, highlighting their relevance for various environmental and engineering applications.
The seminar will also illustrate how rapid electrical measurements can provide valuable insights, opening new research and application opportunities, particularly in the field of geotechnical barriers.
