The unstructured geometrical Volume-of-Flud method for industrial multiphase flows

In the framework of Erasmus Mundus “Multiphase”, the Department of Applied Science and Technology-DISAT of Politecnico di Torino promotes three seminars cover the topic of multiphase flows and their simulation for the development of sustainable processes.

The first seminar titled "The unstructured geometrical Volume-of-Flud method for industrial multiphase flows" will feature with the presence of Tomislav Maric – Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany.

The unstructured geometrical Volume-of-Flud (UGVOF) method is widely used for industrial simulations of multiphase flows due to its ability to admit geometrically complex flow domains and ensure high-volume conservation. However the UGVOF faces open challenges, in the form of an accurate approximation of the surface tension force, stable handling of fluid phases with large density differences, and capillary time step limitation, which decrease the predictiveness and efficiency of the UGVOF method when simulating industrial multiphase flows. In this talk, we will explore open challenges in the UGVOF method, by motivating them with industrial applications and analyzing them using governing equations and their discretization.
