Hosting an internship

Why host an internship?

An internship is a learning experience that allows students to gain professional skills through hands-on training within a company or an organization.

However, setting up an internship can be just as valuable for the Host Organization. There are many benefits for companies and institutions: from getting to know potential candidates by observing them in action and involving them in real projects, to gaining fresh ideas and innovative solutions that help you stay ahead of industry trends, from training future full-time employees to promoting your organization among those looking for a job.

Have you already identified a student for a curricular internship or a graduate for a graduate internship?

  • Yes:
    • to host a student for a CURRICULAR INTERNSHIP (called "pratico valutativo" only for the Professional Bachelor's degree in Industrial Manufacturing Technologies, enrolments from the a.y. 2023/2024), you need to check the procedures of the specific degree programme from which you would like to recruit your intern to find out when and how the internship can take place. Then, move on to point 2;
    • in order to host a graduate for a GRADUATE INTERNSHIP,  you can go directly to point 2.
  • No:
    • to contact students and graduates for an internship, you can request one of our placement services. Once you have identified the candidate, you can move on to point n.2.

Please note that companies must respect specific quotas for hosting interns:

  • companies without employees, i.e. individual companies: 1 intern;
  • companies with up to 5 employees: 1 intern;
  • companies with 6 to 20 employees: no more than 2 interns at the same time;
  • companies with more than 20 employees: the number of interns must not exceed 10% of the total number of employees at the same time, rounded to the higher unit.

In calculating the quota, the total number of employees includes both permanent and temporary employees provided that the latter were hired before the beginning of the internship and finish their job after the end of the internship. Partners - who have been working within the company for more than one year and receive compensation for thier work other than the allowance for participation in the company’s administrative bodies - are also included in the calculation of the total number of employees. Apprentices, curricular interns, and students who are working at their thesis project at the company are excluded from the calculation.

Will the curricular or graduate internship take place in Italy?

  • Yes: go to point 3;
  • No: the process for internships abraod is different from the process for Italy-based internships. This is due to different labour regulations in the host countries. First of all, you must register your company must register to our service at this LINK.

    Once the registration request has been submitted, you will receive a confirmation email containing a validation link. After validating the registration, you will get the credentials to access the platform. You need to complete your company profile and upload a copy of the company registration certificate (translated into English) or, if unavailable, a copy of the ID of the legal representative or an authorized delegate. These documents must be uploaded to the “Request Internship Agreement” section.

    At the end of this procedure, your company will be on the list of host companies/institutions and the interns will be able to proceed to fill out their online internship agreement (tab "internship" on your personal page).

    TEMPLATE Internship Agreement (curricular) and TEMPLATE Internship Agreement (graduate)

For curricular internships, the procedure is the same for all Italian regions, so you can go directly to point 4.

For graduate internships, is the internship based in Piemonte or Lombardia?

  • Yes: go to point 4;
  • No: in this case, in order to prepare the documents required by specific regional regulations, we suggest you to activate the internship trough a Promoting Institution (e.g. Centro per l'Impiego) located in the regional territory of the internship.

Is your business already affiliated with Politecnico so it can host interns?

  • Yes: go to point 5;
  • I don't know: to check if your company has already signed an Agreement with Politecnico, you can write to tirocini@polito.it indicating the company/insitution name and VAT number.
  • No: to host an internship in Italy there must be an AGREEMENT between Politecnico di Torino (sponsor) and your company (host organization).

There are two possible Agreements depending of the type of internship that you would like to host:

  • Agreement for curricular internships with a five-year duration.
  • Agreement for graduate internships with a two-year duration.

You can fill in the agreement in your CORPORATE AREA of Politecnico portal - "Internship Agreement” Section.

The automatic procedure for recovering lost credentials is available HERE.

If your company is not registered yet, you can register at this LINK.

The Agreement must be digitally signed and uploaded to your corporate area (detailed instructions in the process). The digital signature seals the document and for this reason it must be added as the last thing!

The Agreement is subject to revenue stamp tax according to DPR n. 642/1972. The tax (€ 16.00 revenue stamp - to be paid by the employer, except in cases of exemptions provided for by the law) may be paid trough the application of a paper mark visible on the document - kept at the office of the employer  - or, alternatively, through the payment of a telematic revenue stamp.

The document will be registered as soon as possible. Once the Agreement has been registered, you will be able to move to point 5.

Do not modify the templates and do not send templates! Your company's agreement will be generated by the system when you log into the portal with your credentials.

To activate an internship, the future intern needs to fill in a TRAINING PROJECT* on his/her personal PoliTO page.

The approval process for curricular internships is fully computerized. The training project, electronically signed by the parties, can be downloaded by both the intern (from the "Opportunities" section) and by the host organization (from the "Internship Offers" section) from their personal pages of the portal. On the contrary, for graduate internships, the training project must be signed with handwritten signatures.

WARNING: for curricular internships, the internship end date indicated on the training project is only a tentative date. Any extensions (possible only when students need to reach the amount of hours established in the training project) or business trips/site inspections will have to be indicated directly by the intern on the timesheet. The last day of the internship indicated on the timesheet will be the actual end date of the internship (which was only tentative when the training project was approved). The internship may then end earlier or later than originally planned. In case of business trips/site inspections,  interns need to indicate the location and time on the timesheet in order to ensure insurance coverage.

*Please note that, for graduate internships activated by Politecnico and carried out in Piemonte, interns do not have to fill in their Training Project on the Piemonte Region Internships Portal, but they need to comply with the rules of Politecnico di Torino indicated in this page. The host Company/Institution is required to ensure mandatory communications via the Geco system, indicating the same data and, in particular, the same internship start and end dates that the intern has included in the training project.

The documents that an intern needs to submit to Politecnico at the end of a CURRICULAR INTERNSHIP vary according to the rules of the degree programme in which the intern is enrolled.

Upon completion of a GRADUATE INTERNSHIP, the intern must:

  • send the attendance booklet duly completed for each day of activity (including the required signatures) by ticket;
  • fill out the experience evaluation questionnaire available in the "Opportunities" section of  the intern's personal page by clicking on the internship file;
  • send the certificate of skills by ticket (form available in item 8 of the online training project), signed by the company and by the academic tutor.

Students also have the opportunity to work on their thesis project at a company/institution. Normally the thesis topics are of mutual interest to both parties (student and company) and they must be consistent with the student's educational path.

The thesis project at a company is not an internship and and it involves different management procedures. For more information, send a ticket at this LINK, section "RULES, STUDENT CAREERS AND OTHER INFORMATION - FINAL EXAM" to contact the competent office (Career Unit).
